What is Marble?
The Marble Open Learning Taxonomy is an open, community-maintained map of the concepts, skills, and prerequisites that make up a K-12 education. Think of it as a giant, structured index of everything schools teach, and how those ideas connect.
Each topic in Marble has a place: what comes before it, what builds on it, which subject it belongs to, and roughly when in a child's schooling it shows up. That structure is what lets us give you context, not just a definition.
The learning science we lean on
Three ideas from cognitive science shape how we write every answer.

Prior knowledge matters most.
New learning sticks when it connects to something a child already knows. Marble lets us name that prior knowledge, so parents can see the on-ramp instead of guessing.

Concepts live in networks, not lists.
Skills are connected. Fractions link to division, division links to place value, place value links to counting. When you understand the network, a confusing homework question makes sense.

Plain language beats jargon.
Research on parent engagement is clear: when families understand what school is asking, they can help. Our job is to translate, gently and accurately, without dumbing anything down.
Why every answer has the same shape
Every reply follows four sections: what's happening, why teachers use it, how you can help tonight, and what's next. That structure is not marketing. It is the actual instruction we give the model, so you always know where to look.
What School Explained is not
